Euro 2008 champions Spain endured a difficult start before finally seeing off Chile 2-1 in Pretoria, as both teams progressed to the knockout stages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The South Americans, who have impressed many with their performances so far in the tournament, looked more than capable of producing an upset that would have seen the Spanish join fellow European big names France, and defending World Cup champions Italy, in making a shock early exit.

But superbly taken goals from Barcelona pair David Villa and Andres Iniesta, coupled with the Chileans being reduced to ten men meant that Spain would ultimately seal their place in the next round in relatively comfortable fashion.
